Hamas and Fatah to Keep Trying

“The next round will determine everything,” a Fatah official said. “Egypt will not allow a failure.”

The two Palestinian rival factions finished what was called their "last round" of national unity talks on Tuesday the 28th of April. They accomplished nothing. They did, however, agree to meet again. The insult exchange, which is typical of politics, continues between the two groups.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas leader, said that Egypt has set May 15th as the new deadline for reaching an agreement.

Colonization of the Arctic

As polar ice begins to melt, new sea routes will be opened. Tons of diamonds, oil, and other precious materials are beneath the now melting ice.

The capitalists are all racing to get their own chunk of the Arctic. Norway already has UN backing for its claims in the Arctic. The US, Canada, and Denmark already have their rights settled in the region. Russia plans on extending its interests in the Arctic as well.

NATO has said that they might have to send their military forces to the Arctic. As anybody with a brain can guess, Russian and NATO forces competing in the Arctic will only cause more trouble for the proletariat. It will heighten the tensions between the two great powers, Russia and the US. It could even lead to more wars.

There was an international meeting in Norway about Arctic claims recently. The politicians couldn't agree on how to divide the North Pole's riches. I believe that proves my point that colonization of the Arctic is pure trouble.

Greedy pigs, get out of the Arctic!

Hamas and Fatah Begin Final Talks

Hamas and Fatah met for the final round of national unity talks in Cairo on Sunday the 26th. The talks will last for three days.

Nabil Amr, the Palestinian ambassador to Cairo, said he hoped this round "would be the last before an agreement (is reached), because a time-limit must be set."

A Hamas spokesman said that this round of talks would be the most difficult. Hillary Clinton even expressed doubt that reconciliation would happen between the two rival Palestinian factions.

On Sunday, a member of the PLO said this would be the last meeting between the two groups if reconciliation attempts failed again.

As always, they will be discussing the formation of a national unity government, reforming the security apparatuses, and new electoral laws.

Abbas said that a new cabinet must abide by past Israeli-Palestinian agreements. "It is the government and its members that should respect such deals and not movements," Abbas commented.

International donors have pledged 4.5 million dollars to rebuild Gaza, but the money was sent to Abbas. So Gazans haven’t seen any of that money. Certainly Fatah would give the money to the Gazans if they weren’t afraid the US would label them as terrorists. As proof, I cite the fact that US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said no aid would flow to Hamas or any group controlled by Hamas. She even ruined talks by intimidating Fatah a few months ago.

Prejudiced Against Young People? There is an App for that!

The capitalists at Apple recently released an app called “Baby Shaker.” It’s a game where the iPhone makes the sound of a crying baby and displays a picture of a baby. In order to make the noise stop, you must shake the iPhone.

"On a plane, on the bus, in a theater. Babies are everywhere you don’t want them to be! They’re always distracting you from preparing for that big presentation at work with their incessant crying. Before Baby Shaker there was nothing you could do about it," the app's introduction said.

Apple chose to sell this game, turning down equally disgusting games about drug dealers and even murder. The fact that they sold this (cr)ap(p), but not the other disgusting apps, shows that Apple doesn’t believe morals should apply when dealing with children. It shows that the capitalist class, or at least those working at Apple, support and encourage violence against youth.

The app was promptly removed from Apple’s store when sane people began complaining.

The IMF says the global economy is set to decline

The global economy is set to decline by 1.3% in 2009, in the first global recession since World War II, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) says.

In January, the IMF had predicted world output would increase by 0.5% in 2009.

It now projects that the UK will see its economy shrink by 4.1% in 2009, and by a further 0.4% in 2010.

But other major economies are predicted to shrink even more, with Germany declining by 5.6%, Japan by 6.2%, and Italy by 4.4% in 2009.

The prospects for the advanced economies are not much brighter in 2010, with an overall forecast of zero growth.

IMF Chief economist, Olivier Blanchard, says some countries face 'serious balance of payment problems'

The IMF says this represents "by far the deepest post-World War II recession" with an actual decline in output in countries making up 75% of the world economy.

Currently, output is falling by an "unprecedented" 7.5% annual rate in the rich countries in the last quarter of 2008, and the IMF expects the same rate of decline in the first quarter of this year.

Only a recovery in developing and emerging market countries will propel the world economy back into positive growth in 2010, albeit at a relatively weak level of 1.9%.

The prospects for world trade are even gloomier, with the IMF now forecasting world trade volumes to decline by 11% in 2009, and barely grow at all in 2010.

After 60 years as the engine of world growth, the sharp fall in trade is now hitting many of the leading exporting nations, particularly in Asia.

Prisons Abusing Children

The Southern Poverty Law Center sent out an email to members and supporters recently. I would just like to thank the SPL Center for proving my claim that the system is overly, and sometimes violently, prejudiced against young people. Here is the text of the email.

"Today we filed suit to stop the horrible abuse of children at a Mississippi detention center, where they are confined in filthy, bug-infested cells for 23 hours a day with no adequate mental health or education services.

Our client, D.W., is a 17-year-old African-American youth who endured a brutal physical assault by guards who slammed his face into a concrete floor. After a week at the facility, he tried to hang himself with a bed sheet. But rather than provide him counseling, guards harassed and taunted him — telling him his mother no longer cared and would not visit him again.

The children held at the Harrison County Juvenile Detention Center in Biloxi are not hardened criminals. Most are accused of minor, nonviolent offenses and are simply awaiting court hearings.*

This detention center is operated for profit by a company that has blocked civil rights investigators from inspecting the facility, even though they have a right under federal law to monitor the conditions there.

Dozens of other children describe their own nightmarish experiences. Because their cells were overcrowded, many slept on the floor next to dirty toilets. Infections were rampant. Guards were quick to use violence. One teen described conditions as "unbearable" and said children were treated like "dogs."

It's appalling that a private company is being allowed to profit from the misery and suffering of these children.

This lawsuit is just one of the strategies we're using to protect children from a broken system that would rather spend money on prisons than mental health services and education. Across the country, thousands of children — disproportionately black and many suffering from mental disabilities — are being needlessly incarcerated for petty offenses."

Before I end this, I have two youth liberation quotes I want the reader to see.

"Do you charge us with wanting to stop the exploitation of children by their parents? To this crime we plead guilty." - The Communist Manifesto, chapter 2

“The young are not our inferiors.” - Mao Zedong

* I would just like to add that people often leave prisons worse than when they went in. This is because they aren't being reeducated, but rather exposed to higher levels of criminal activity through the illegal abuses prisoners suffer, neglect, and gang activity by prisoners in the prison system.

Quick Update 4/19/09

The North Koreans have withdrawn from the six-party talks. They will be restarting their plant that makes nuclear-grade material. Many people suspect this will not last long, and the talks will eventually start up again.

------

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is sending an ambassador to the USA. This came after he met with US President Barack Obama. The two countries expelled each others ambassadors last year.

------

The Taliban suicide bombed a military checkpoint in Pakistan. They said more attacks will happen unless the US stops its missile attacks on tribal areas.

------

France has arrested a man they suspect of being the military chief of the Basque-separatist ETA. Jurdan Martitegi and two other suspected ETA members were captured on Saturday in southeastern France following a joint operation between French and Spanish police.

India's Poor are Worse Off Now

India's poor are facing an escalation of their harsh reality. Due to the economic crises which started in the US and Europe, the Indian poor are now rapidly losing their jobs, their children are dying of malnutrition, and workers' payments are shrinking. This might sound normal for India, and it is, but it's getting worse now.

The decline of the Indian textile industry started years ago, and the economic crises is only making it worse. The poor are losing their trust in politicians, and this is very justified!

Speaking metaphorically, why should the foreign poor catch a fatal illness whenever the American and European upper-classes sneeze? India is suffering because of the powerful extent that imperialist influence (more like influenza) has on it, and from this we can conclude that India only won some, if any, of the independence it fought for years ago.

The Maoist rebels, and their allies, are the only hope for India's poor!

I believe the example of modern India proves James Connolly right when he said this nice, and I believe universal, quote. "If you remove the English army to-morrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain." - James Connolly, 1897

Review of WRVA and the Doc Thompson Show

There is a right-wing radio station in Richmond, VA (no surprise there), but it’s not a good station. The radio station is 1140 WRVA. They aren’t very original, which is why they fill up most of their timeslots with Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck. The WRVA website also features a game where one of the levels is about shooting dogs. That is in poor taste! Dogs are people’s pets, you shouldn’t shoot them unless it’s self-defense. I know not everyone will go out and shoot their neighbors’ pet dog after playing that game, but come on, that is just sick. Americans don’t eat dogs, so it’s not like hunting ducks (the other part of the game).

I want to type about one of their radio personalities. His name is Doc Thompson. He has a radio show on the WRVA radio station in Richmond. I heard his garbage when I spent some time in that city. He might broadcast to other places as well, but I don’t know. His show is also on the internet.

Anyway, he is just a complete piece of trash. Over the past year, I have heard him demonize America’s young people on his show, because God forbid conservatives respect anybody who isn’t middle aged or a senior citizen, and I have seen him censor his audience. He only lets people who agree with him, and suck up to him, talk to him over the phone on the air. I can’t exactly prove that he does this, it just seems that way. At least I’m honest and willing to admit I can’t prove it. Thompson probably wouldn’t be that honest. Then again, it is his radio show and he can do what he likes with it, and I have every right to criticize him here.

Thompson has a picture of himself on his page on the WRVA website. Here is the picture.

He looks really young in the picture. Now, lets see a picture of him from 2009.

He looks older. Now, I know people age. But why didn’t he update his picture on his webpage? Is he that ashamed of himself and his looks? I think he is. I think he has some type of complex. He needs to see a psychiatrist or something.

Doc Thompson’s page on the WRVA website also says that he was fired from many radio stations across the US. He might change it, because he is cowardly, but as of 4/8/09 it said that. So the WRVA station has picked up trash from other stations (another example of its lack of originality). If he has been fired from several radio stations, chances are good that the problem is with him, not the other stations.

In a 2008 interview/debate with James Clyburn (a Congressman from South Carolina) he acted quite hypocritically. He said to Clyburn, “you’re still trying to point fingers on this thing.” He accused Clyburn of simply blaming people and not solving an issue. Earlier in the interview, and it wasn’t earlier by much, Thompson said, “it’s the fault of everybody in government right now,” and then he continued to support the idea of blaming Congress. So Thompson contradicted himself. All of the sudden Clyburn isn’t allowed to blame people for things, but Doc Thompson is! Thompson holds double-standards. He is a hypocrite. In case you were wondering, the topic they were discussing was freezing and unfreezing credit. From there they went into the Community Reinvestment Act. I’m not going to get into the issue because this blog entry isn’t about that.

Later in the interview, Thompson said, “I just did a story yesterday, where Los Angeles got 33 million dollars for housing in the middle of a housing crisis.” The tone he used to say that seemed to be against giving LA money for housing. So Mr. Thompson doesn’t want people in LA to have housing. He wants them to live on the street. Of course, he’ll probably respond that the people should take care of themselves. I think responsibility is a good thing, but to just turn the other cheek and let people suffer on the street is by no means a good idea. I didn’t hear this story on LA that he was referring to, so maybe I misunderstood him and have this out of context. But that is what it sounds like he was saying. So he is either reckless with his words, and therefore shouldn’t be on the radio, or he is a greedy, heartless jerk.

In this interview, he went on to say that people were ready to form a mob and storm Washington D.C. because they were tired of government spending. He also tried to tell Mr. Clyburn about the number of phone calls Mr. Clyburn receives from his constituents who are opposed to his policies. There is only one problem here. Thompson did not make reference to any statistics or studies regarding these issues. So it’s not credible. Thompson could be making stuff up about how the majority of Americans feel for all we know. Why should we believe him?

At the end of that interview he said, “If in order to get all of you bums kicked out, if it takes collapsing America, I’m ready for it.” Thompson was talking about Congress when he said “bums.” We should keep in mind that Thompson bills himself as very patriotic. He claims to love the USA. Apparently he was only lying about his patriotism and only cares about himself. He comes off as a conservative, or at least a fence-sitter, but then he goes and says something like that. Either he is a typical opportunist, or he is a Nazi. Those are the only groups that would claim to love their country and then say something like that. Doc Thompson is a hypocrite. I’m not claiming to be patriotic at all. I’m just calling Thompson out on his crap.

Another thing Doc Thompson likes to do is get on his little radio show and complain about VA Governor Tim Kaine. According to SurveyUSA, only 37% of Virginians aren’t satisfied with the job Kaine is doing. If over 50% like him, then he can’t be as evil as Thompson makes him out to be. Anyway, it’s clear that Thompson is in the minority here, and is nothing more than a typical, right-wing, fringe group wacko!

I’m not trying to say Kaine and Clyburn are great guys. I know they have their bad sides, flaws, and errors of judgment. I’m against them as well, but I feel that Doc Thompson isn’t criticized enough. These politicians face criticism every day, it’s part of their job. Radio losers like Thompson don’t face enough criticism. But that is just my opinion.

I will be keeping tabs on the hypocrisy, bigotry, cruelty, and idiocy of this radio station and Doc Thompson regularly. I’ll post new entries if they do or say something else that is noteworthy.

Click here for another entry I wrote about WRVA, Doc Thompson, and his co-workers.

Hamas and Fatah Postpone Unity Talks

Hamas and Fatah have postponed their unity talks until April 26th. The recent talks have failed to reach an agreement on key issues, including the formation of a transitional unity government, rebuilding the Palestinian Security Forces, the system of upcoming elections, and reforming the PLO. Fatah wants the PLO to be the umbrella for watching the implementation of any agreement. Hamas still rejects the international Quartet requirements.

"No one dares to say that the dialogue has reached to a deadlock because our people usually rejects anything that contradicts with the national unity and with the constructive dialogue," said Nabil Amer, ambassador of the Palestinian National Authority in Egypt. He said the talks haven't failed, they have just been postponed for consultation.

North Korea Reacts to Condemnation

"If the Security Council, they take any kind of steps whatever, we'll consider this is (an) encroachment on our sovereignty and the next option will be ours," North Korean Deputy Ambassador Pak Tok Hun said. "Necessary and strong steps will ... follow that. While they themselves launch more than a hundred times the satellites ... we are not allowed to do that. That is not democratic."

Russia and China, along with three other council members, said that they are against the American and Japanese demands to punish the DPRK.

"There are similarities but also differences between rocket and missile technology," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said. "Launching a satellite is different in nature from firing a missile or a nuclear test. This issue also involves the right of all countries to peaceful use of outer space." The People's Republic of China has nuclear weapons, so Jiang Yu's words have tons of credibility.

North Korean TV released footage of their rocket launch on Tuesday.

DPRK Rocket 4/5/09

According to the imperialist American officials, and their puppets in South Korea, the rocket that North Korea luanched has "fizzled." They said that it crashed in the Pacific Ocean along with whatever it might have been carrying. North Korea is claiming that its "satellite" is now safely up in space transmitting music and data.

Security Council members met for three hours on Sunday, seeking a united response, but the meeting ended in disagreement. It broke up for the night without issuing even a customary preliminary statement of condemnation. The US, France, UK, and Japan are drawing up proposals to punish North Korea with further economic sanctions.

Diplomats are saying China, Russia, Libya and Vietnam were concerned about further alienating and destabilizing North Korea. "We're now in a very sensitive moment," Chinese Ambassador Zhang Yesui said. "Our position is that all countries concerned should show restraint and refrain from taking actions that might lead to increased tensions."

"North Korea, like any other country, has the right to enter space," Iran's state TV said, adding that the "pressure on North Korea to give up its indisputable right" was "unfair and dishonest." Iran is believed to have cooperated extensively with the DPRK on the launch.

The reaction among South Korean civilians has been restricted to minor street demonstrations, and met with apathy and neutrality. You see, even the people who supposedly "live in fear of communist attack every day" aren't worried about the North Koreans' rocket launch. It just goes to show that the bourgeois politicians are intentionally overreacting and fear mongering in order to push their imperialist agenda.

In my opinion, the Chinese Ambassador is right. Further punishing and isolating North Korea will only make them do more "provocative" acts, but that is only if you consider this provocative. If past actions failed to stop them from doing this mess with the rocket/satellite/missile, then it's not going to work now. As I've stated in earlier entries, the DPRK isn't strong enough to take part in an arms race or nuclear war with the imperialist West. Kim Jong Il knows this, so it probably is only a communications satellite.

DPRK Rocket Launch "Provocative"

North Korea, or DPRK, says it will soon launch its experimental communications satellite.

"Preparations for launching 'Kwangmyongsong-2,' an experimental communications satellite, by carrier rocket 'Unha-2' have been completed at the satellite launching ground in the east coastal area," the Korean Central News Agency said.

The Korean Committee of Space Technology said, "the satellite will be launched soon."

South Korea, Japan, and the US have deployed warships to monitor the rocket launch.

Barack Obama called the missile launch "provocative." The US, South Korea, and Japan suspect that North Korea is testing its long-range missile technology. Obama, appearing with French President Sarkozy, said the US would, "take appropriate steps to let North Korea know that it can't threaten the safety and security of other countries with impunity." Anyone who has studied history knows that an American president speaking out against "threatening the world" is like Jack the Ripper speaking out against murder.

South Korea has already composed a pro-imperialist task force, and they are drawing up post-launch measures.

The US, and countries under its imperial umbrella, have all the anti-missile protection in the world. North Korea knows this. So they wouldn't waste time and money shooting a missile at anyone. The US and its allies have a superior missile system, and more finances to back it up, then North Korea does. The DPRK knows this, and they know starting a nuclear war and/or an arms race would be suicide. So chances are very good that this "missile" really is a communications satellite. Even if it is a missile, it can't do any harm since the US and its allies have top-notch anti-missile defenses. So what is the harm in letting North Korea test its missile, if it even is a missile?

The imperialists want to keep North Korea weak and poor, like they are trying to do to Cuba, in order to bring about regime change that is favorable to the US. They don't want the DPRK to have nuclear weapons because they act as a deterrent to NATO invasion. I'm not defending North Korea's Juche ideology, I certainly believe the people of North Korea can do better than Kim Jong Il, but imperialist invasion will make things worse for the Korean people and the world.
